Visual Arts Project Set To Show On The Buildings Of Lichfield
Three large public art posters have gone on display on one of Lichfield's grade II* listed Georgian buildings and are the first in a series which will go on show around the city.
All of the posters have been designed as part of the ‘52 Weeks of Art' project which is supported by the Arts Council West Midlands. The project has been developed to raise the profile of the visual arts in the city by offering free access to the general public.
The first three posters currently adorn the facade of St Johns House which is a newly opened luxury boutique bed and breakfast located on St John Street. The three posters will be on display for the next month and are a part of a series of 26 which will be appearing around Lichfield during the next 6 months.
The series will depict different art styles of the 20th century but with a twist as they all have a link to Lichfield. The first three duly show reworkings of Andy Warhol, with a pop art version of Samuel Johnson; Rat le Bek with a street art interpretation of David Garrick and Joseph Kosuth with a dictionary definition of the historic uses of the poster.
The posters are being designed by professional and developing artists, students and schools.
Project coordinator, Peter Walker commented: "Lichfield is a great city, yet with no major art gallery it is difficult to access visual artwork. The large posters are a chance for people to have access to a varied and diverse range of art styles from the past 100 years and a chance to discover new styles and art movements. It is also a great way for a young artist to get their work seen in their city.
"The project will soon be offering access to free workshops, exhibitions and other happenings, and is the perfect opportunity to gain access to the arts and to get involved".
